now or never

A bit of a cliche to launch something new at the beginning of Spring but here I am.

The idea for a blog first came to me when I embarked on living abroad. My first concept was a guide to moving away from home for the first time; this was quickly shutdown by my inner critic telling me that there were bigger struggles in the world than someone learning how to cook, to clean and do their laundry.

After that steep learning curve (a.k.a. adulting), the times that followed for taking on new things became charmed and my mantra of sorts quickly evolved to Eat Well, Travel Often - life happened and very quickly! As my experience changed, the blog concept evolved into capturing delightful moments from trying new bars and restaurants as well as visiting new cities. However, my inner critic then told me “who has time for a blog - both to read it and write it!” - just get out there and live your life no need to chronicle it. However, I often found myself wishing I had a pause button just so I could take it all in.

Almost ten years later, here I am thinking that I wish I had a bit more courage when I first embarked on this adventure and that I had a consistent record to make it easy to look back on all those moments when I recognized a turning point or a lesson learned, and most important when I felt like I was on top of the world. Well, it’s now or never!

In the last year, there haven’t been many opportunities to eat well and travel often so I will start with looking back and chronicling the last ten years in the hope that we will soon be able to return to a world where it is safe to move around and responsibly cross borders. In the grandest of dreams I’m hoping that I can inspire and enable - if I can do it, you can do it!- but in the current socially distanced world, just being relatable would be great.

Maxine Borja

My name is Maxine. I am currently a 30 something discovering adulthood at a time of global uncertainty.

In July 2021, I will be celebrating 10 years of living abroad; I was born, raised, and educated in Manila, the Philippines. In 2011, my professional life gave me an opportunity to pursue my career in Singapore. In 2015, I took an opportunity to further my career in New York City. In 2020, I decided to pursue a challenge across the Atlantic in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

This is a combination of a passion project, a happiness project, and an autobiography of sorts… I hope you’ll join me on this adventure called life.
